Day 1: Tue
CUZCO/CHILCA/HUAYLLABAMBA
A two hours bus journey takes us to Chilca, where we meet
our porters and begin the trek. At first we follow the course
of the Urubamba River, high above the rapids and the railway,
until we arrive, after about 3 hours at Llactapata, the confluence
of four rivers, where there is an extensive archaeological
site in a beautiful natural setting. Here we leave the Urubamba
and set off up the Kusichaca river to our camp in the vicinity
of the village of Huayllabamba.

HUAYLLABAMBA/PACAYMAYO
Today a steep ascent takes us through an area of tropical
cloud forest and up to the Llulluchayoc Valley. The views
are spectacular as we climb up to the Warmihuañusca Pass (13,700
ft) and then drop steeply down again into the beautiful Pacaymayo
Valley to make camp.

PACAYMAYO/PHUYUPATAMARCA
An easier climb takes us past the remains of Runcuracay look-out,
from here we look across the snow-capped peaks of the Cordillera
Vilcabamba. Traversing the Runcuracay Pass we soon notice
a change in the vegetation as we have crossed the continental
divide into the Amazon Basin.
The Inca Trail now becomes more apparent, descending past
Yanacocha (The Black Lagoon), a dry lake, we reach the ancient
complex of Sayajmarca. Then suddenly we enter the rain-forest.
The trail, now unmistakable, passes at one point through an
Inca tunnel before opening out at the route's highest Inca
construction at Phuyupatamarca, camping nearby.

PHUYUPATAMARCA/MACHU PICCHU
Now we are in open country again. Far away we get glimpses
of Mounts Pumasillo and Salcantay, and thousands of feet below,
we see once again the Urubamba River. Then the long descent
down the amazing, never ending Inca steps begins.
Stopping off at the well-preserved remains of Wiñay Wayna.
At Inti Punku, the Inca gate of the sun, we get our first
sight of Machu Picchu. We finally cross the ridge that leads
to our destination, and the full grandeur of the greatest
archaeological discovery of modern times is revealed. We spend
the night at our last camp, below the site, next to the river.
Day 5
Sat
MACHU PICCHU/CUZCO
We return to the citadel in the early light of dawn, for an
extensive guided tour. Then we take an exciting train ride,
travelling in the first class tourist coach along the Urubamba
valley back to Cuzco and transfer to the hotel.
