Ecotourists, birdwatchers, orchid fanciers, nature lovers can all fulfill their wildest dreams in the world's last great frontier. We can arrange extensions before or after your selected "The Best of Peru" combinations to visit the areas described below. The Amazon Basin runs down the eastern flank of Peru, providing travelers different environments in which to cruise on the rivers, stay in jungle lodges and explore the rain forest. From Iquitos, one reaches the mighty Amazon mainstream; from Cusco visitors may fly or go overland to the Tambopata and Manu nature reserves.

IQUITOS

Nonstop jets hop over the Andes from Lima to Iquitos. The busy port was built in the rubber-boom days of the Amazon and is now a base for river-boat departures to rustic but confortable jungle camps up and down river. Two to five-night programs are available. By day, guests take boat trips up small tributaries, walk along rain forest trails and visit Indian villages. By night, alligator hunting in dugout canoes is a favorite pastime. Large vessels carry passengers on three-night cruises

Day 1: LIMA / IQUITOS / EXPLORAMA LODGE

Transfer to Lima airport.
Upon arrival in Iquitos transfer to pier and motor boat ride en route to Explorama Lodge, 80 kms/ 50 mls, down the Amazon river. After lunch, walk into the jungle and explore the river surroundings in dugout canoes by night.

Day 2: AMAZON RIVER / NAPO RIVER / EXPLORNAPO CAMP / LAKE SHIMIGAY

Early wake-up for a boat trip down the Amazon and up the Napo river to Explornapo Camp, located 160 kms/100 mls from Iquitos. Hike on various secluded primary rainforest trails and excursion to Lake Shimigay, a black water lake where the unusual Hoatzin bird can be seen. Dinner and overnight at Explornapo Camp.

Day 3: AMAZON BIOSPHERE RESERVE / ACEER

Enjoy "a walk on the high side", the canopy walkway, currently 200 meters/650 feet long, over 30 meters/100 feet above the ground and extending through six of the area's largest trees. After lunch, walk on trails throughout the Amazon Biosphere Reserve surrounding the ACEER Laboratory (Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research), which now includes over 500,000 acres; overnight at the ACEER lodge.

Day 4: NAPO RIVER

Enjoy additional ecological excursions. Boat trip down the Napo river to Explorama Lodge for overnight.

Day 5: IQUITOS / LIMA

Morning free for relaxation or to enjoy additional ecological excursions. After lunch boat trip back to Iquitos; transfer to the airport. Upon arrival in Lima transfer to selected hotel.
