DIVING
Costa
Rica's North Pacific coast is the diving world's newest discovery.Few
places in the world have waters with such varied and plentiful marine
life. Couple this with the Ocotal's luxurious resort facilities
, dive boats and professional dive masters, the country's natural
beauty and is warm, friendly people, and you have the most exciting
alternative to traditional dive destinations.
Diving
can be great any month of the year. Visibility can vary from 20
to 80 ft. On the same day on differents dives. This is primarily
due to the abundance of plankton and other marine organisms at the
lower end of the food chain that thrive in warm 72 to 82 degree
waters.
Most dives are around pinnacle rock formations at 40 to 80 feet
depths and there is no telling what the diver will see. All most
every dive, regardless where, clouds of small schooling fish meet
the divers on descent. Usually these schools of thousand of fish
allow divers to swin freely amongst them.
Some
divers seize the opportunity to arrange for special diving safaris
to the Bat or Catalina Island. These islands chains, located 21
and 14 miles from Ocotal, present unique challenging Pacific Ocean
diving. Dive spots in these areas offer good chances to see large
Bull Sharks, giant Manta Rays, Eagle Rays and large schools of four
or five different species of fish simultaneously.
The dive shop carries equipment for 40 divers and has two top of
the line 13.1 CFM Mako Compressors. Our 32 ft. dive boats, are set
up with diver comfort in mind offering side mounted tanks racks,
swim platform, dive ledder, fresh water shower, head and large shaded
areas. Although the dive facility might receive groups up to 60
divers in size, there are never more than 10 divers per boat. Two
dive masters lead all dives, regardless of the number of divers
in the water.
The
Dive Shop is located on the beach and only steps away from guests
accommodation. Is fully equipped to meet all the divers need.

FISHING
Because
fishermen deserve not only excellent fishing but also excellent
accommodations and service, Ocotal Beach Resort was conceived in
1978 to provide an alternative to the traditional rustic sportfishing
facilities available in the tropical paradise of Costa Rica. Ocotal
has taken care to devote equal concern to its boats, fishing and
crews as it does to how our fishermen spend their non-fishing hours.
Ocotal
is proud of its new outstanding fleet of 30 to 42 ft. sportfishing
boats.
The
fertile fishing grounds of the Gulf of Papagayo provides year round
action for approximately 25 varieties of sportfish. Although most
famous for its sailfishing from April through September, these same
waters produce great marling catches almost every month of the year.
During peak months, Ocotal boats regulary raise 10 to 20 sailfish
each day. But sails are caught year round averaging 1 to 2 sails
raised per day from October through March. Boat crews are experienced
to assist light tackle and fly fishermen challenge these 100 pound
plus fish.
The Gulf of Papagayo´s marlin fishing is recognized as some of the
finest in the world. Black marlin are caught all months of the year
with the best chances from May through August. For blue marlin,
ones again our waters are considered some of the finest in the world.
Seen year round most catches are made during December, January,
February, March and April. The rare striped marlin is also occasionally
catched in our waters. Apart from billfish, probably the most sought
after prey for the sport fishermen is the roosterfish. More trophy-size
rooster are taken from waters around Ocotal than any place in the
world. Generally taken on live bait, 40 to 60 pound roosters can
be taken with amazing certainty year round. Other popular sportfish
include Dogtooth Snapper, Wahoo, Dorado and Yellow Fin Tuna.
These
boats all have a flying bridge, shaded top, fightingchair head,
outriggers, downriggers and carry an array of 20 to 80 pound Penn.
International trolling rods and reels.
All captains have knowledge of English, specially with regards to
their trade.
